2022 Conference

Updated: Dec 26, 2023

Students from Kelvin High School, Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, and Elmwood High School were delighted to present their research paper at the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution in Winnipeg. This was NorthSTAR's first conference since the pandemic.

The poster compared and contrasted two non-invasive methods of measuring the health of polar bears, in attempt to determine if there was a correlation between the two. Students from the various schools met regularly over many months to organize and analyze the data they collected on their 2022 Churchill Trip, and create their poster. The results of their research suggested that there was no correlation between the two methods - which were previously thought to be measuring the same thing. For more info, see the attached poster below.

This conference allowed the students to present their hard work to fellow interested researchers. Not only was the poster presented, but students were also given the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of seminars to sit-in on, learning about the research that graduate students are doing across Canada.

In future years, NorthSTAR plans to separately compare male and female bears using both methods, to determine if the lack of correlation is due to the physical differences of different gendered bears.
